The Core Formula
Seed-starting date = last frost date − weeks before transplant (from seed packet)
Say your last frost date is April 15, and your tomato packet says "start indoors 6 to 8 weeks before last frost." Counting back 6 weeks from April 15 lands on March 4; counting back 8 weeks lands on February 18. That gives you a starting window, not a single day — useful, because it lets you stagger sowing rather than starting every tomato seed on the same afternoon.
Building the Full Table
To turn this into a real calculator, list every crop you're starting indoors with its own weeks-before-transplant number, then subtract from the same frost date:
- Tomatoes: 6-8 weeks before → late Feb to early March (for an April 15 frost date).
- Peppers: 8-10 weeks before → early to mid February.
- Broccoli: 5-7 weeks before → early to mid March.
- Basil: 6-8 weeks before → late Feb to early March.
- Marigolds: 6-8 weeks before → late Feb to early March.
Notice peppers need to start nearly a month before broccoli, even though both get transplanted around the same week — peppers simply germinate and grow more slowly indoors, which the packet's weeks-before number already accounts for.

Adding a Germination Buffer
The weeks-before-transplant number on a packet assumes normal germination timing, but real trays run slow sometimes — older seed, a cool room, or inconsistent moisture can add 3 to 7 days before you even see sprouts. A safer version of the formula adds a buffer: Adjusted start date = frost date − weeks before transplant − 1 week buffer. For the tomato example above, that shifts the February 18 to March 4 window a week earlier, to February 11 through February 25, giving you room to recover if week one shows no germination at all.
Hardening-Off Time: The Step People Forget to Subtract
"Weeks before transplant" on most packets already assumes a hardening-off period of about a week is built into the final week indoors, but it's worth checking your specific packet's wording. If a packet says "transplant when seedlings are 6 weeks old," you still need 7 to 10 days of hardening off (gradually introducing seedlings to outdoor conditions) before the actual transplant date, which means your true transplant-ready date is your calculated 6-week mark minus another 7 to 10 days pulled from indoor time, not added after it. Build that into your calendar as its own row rather than assuming it's automatically included.
Solving for Grow-Light Capacity
Once every crop has a start date, plot them on a single calendar rather than a crop-by-crop list, and you'll often find several crops clustering into the same one- or two-week window — which matters if your grow-light shelf only holds, say, 4 standard trays (each about 10 by 20 inches). If peppers, tomatoes, and basil all want to start within the same 10-day window and you only have shelf space for 4 trays, you'll need to either stagger sowing across that window or start a second light source, both of which are much easier to spot on a combined calendar than in a scattered set of seed packets.
A Quick Sanity Check
Before finalizing dates, check that every calculated seed-starting date falls before today's date only if you're already behind schedule — a start date that's already passed usually means either a packet's weeks-before number was misread (weeks after, not before) or the subtraction direction was flipped. This single check catches the most common calculator error: subtracting the frost date from the weeks number instead of the other way around.
